What a win from the Dragons! They lost Dylan Egan to a knee injury early in the game, were down to 12 men for a stint, had to deal with incompetent refs awarding a try off a 3-metre forward pass, and still got the win. A great game for the men in the Red V after three losses on the trot.
It was all on the back of King Gutho. The bloke is all effort and just leaves it all out there every week. He scored two tries, ran for 232 metres, made 8 tackle busts, and was involved in the try-saver on Payne Haas in the dying stages. The Dragons are lucky to have him, and I hope they appreciate him as much as I did when he was at Parra!
Jacob Liddle is the Dragons’ best player, I love watching him. His impact is unreal, but the question needs to be asked: would they be a better side with Liddle playing 80? Because they’re a better side every minute he’s on the field.
Also, we’re about to learn if Shane Flanagan is a hypocrite, because his son is doing everything Lachlan Ilias was doing — only worse. His kicking game and decision-making are not up to scratch for a first-grade half.
I’ve got no idea where the Broncos go from here. It’s the same old issues every week: switching on and off during games, poor completion rates, poor discipline, and they look very low on confidence. Payne Haas did his best to get them a win they didn’t deserve with a few barnstorming runs at the end of the game, but it wasn’t enough, and it’s another loss for the Broncos.
On a positive note, Ezra Mam was their best player and showed the Broncos what they were missing during his suspension. He scored a try, set up two more, and made some big hits in defence. It confirms Ben Hunt will be sharing dummy half duties with either Billy Walters or Cory Paix on his return from injury, because Mam looks to have taken his opportunity with both hands.
