The Bulldogs are sitting at the top of the NRL ladder and remain the only undefeated team after four rounds of the season. Last night, they faced their biggest challenge so far, taking on a top-four side in the Cronulla Sharks at Shark Park. Despite being without key players like Matt Burton, Villiame Kikau, and Jacob Kiraz, the Bulldogs completely dominated the Sharks from the very start in every department.
Their defense has been nothing short of extraordinary. Week in and week out, it’s a brick wall of blue and white jerseys, holding strong for the full 80 minutes. Even when the opposition manages to break through or make a tackle-busting run, the Bulldogs’ scramble defense is second to none. Regardless of who is in the 17 each week, everyone is giving their all for the man next to them. Much of this success can be credited to Cameron Ciraldo, whose leadership, along with the support of Phil Gould, has built a solid system and culture in a short period of time.
The forwards, fighting well above their weight class every week, never hesitate to roll up their sleeves and get the job done. Max King, Josh Curran, and Kurt Mann have been especially impressive. Players like Bailey Hayward have also been invaluable, stepping up to fill any role required—from middle forward to hooker to five-eighth—and doing so with great effectiveness over the last two weeks. This adaptability is a huge asset to Ciraldo’s squad.
Bronson Xerri is proving himself to be one of the top centers in the NRL. He had one of his best games yet last night, considering the circumstances, showing just how far he’s come in his career. As the squad continues to gel, the Bulldogs are forming all the necessary pieces to become a genuine top-four side.
Despite their current success, I still believe the Bulldogs are one or two signings away from being a legitimate contender for the premiership. Could DCE be the answer? Phil Gould recently made a public statement, admitting that while he is a huge admirer of Daly Cherry-Evans, he won’t be joining the Bulldogs in 2026. Perhaps this is just a bit of smoke and mirrors, as DCE might be exactly what the Bulldogs need to take that final step toward a premiership.
With their defensive steel and the “next man up” mentality, this Bulldogs team is not just a top-four contender but a side heading in only one direction: up. It’s an exciting time to be a Bulldogs supporter.
