Australian stand-in captain Steve Smith has expressed confidence in teammate Marnus Labuschagne’s batting abilities, despite Labuschagne’s recent modest performances. Smith believes that Labuschagne is not out of form and that a return to high-scoring innings is imminent.
Labuschagne, Australia’s No. 3 batsman, managed 50 runs at an average of 25.00 during the recent series against Sri Lanka. His contributions included an unbeaten 26 in Galle, aiding Australia in securing a 2-0 series victory.
Smith, who was named Player of the Series after scoring twin centuries, drew parallels between his own resurgence and Labuschagne’s current situation. He emphasised that a combination of patience and a bit of luck can lead to a turnaround in form.
Reflecting on his own experiences, Smith noted that maintaining faith in one’s practice and understanding the ebb and flow of the game are crucial. He suggested that Labuschagne’s diligent training and inherent talent position him well for a return to form in the near future.
Labuschagne’s overall performance in the current World Test Championship cycle includes 935 runs at an average of 28.33, with one century over 36 innings. Despite recent challenges, Smith remains optimistic about his teammate’s prospects, stating, “I don’t think he’s out of form personally… Things can turn around pretty quickly.”
As Australia prepares for upcoming fixtures, including the World Test Championship final against South Africa at Lord’s, Smith’s support underscores the team’s confidence in Labuschagne’s abilities and potential for impactful contributions.
