Melbourne Storm forward Christian Welch is contemplating medical retirement following another concussion during the team’s pre-season camp in Geelong. The 30-year-old, who has a history of head injuries, has been granted time away from training to assess his future and was notably absent from the team’s recent photograph.
Welch’s injury history includes a severe Achilles injury and three anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears. He is also facing the possibility of back surgery. His current contract, valued at approximately $600,000 per season, runs through the end of 2025, with an option for 2026. Should he opt for medical retirement, a portion of his 2025 salary would be exempt from the salary cap, potentially freeing up around $400,000 for the Storm.
In anticipation of such scenarios, Melbourne has bolstered its front-row options by signing Wests Tigers prop Stefano Utoikamanu. Alongside Nelson Asofa-Solomona, Josh King, and Tui Kamikamica, the Storm’s forward pack remains formidable.
Welch debuted for Melbourne in 2015 and has since played 163 NRL games. He was part of the 2020 premiership-winning team and previously served as co-captain before being removed from the leadership group at the start of last season. As of May last year, he had suffered six concussions prior to the recent pre-season incident.
Beyond his playing career, Welch has been involved with the Rugby League Players Association, and it’s anticipated he may take on a more prominent role within the organisation upon retirement.
