NRL star Justin Olam has been forced to retire from rugby league effective immediately, following ongoing issues with a knee injury. Olam, who injured his knee during Round 18 last season, has struggled to recover fully despite extensive rehabilitation. After consulting with Tigers medical staff, the decision was made for him to retire which significantly assists the Wests Tigers with salary cap restraints moving into 2026 after spending huge money on Jarome Luai. His retirement is expected to clear around $600,00 per season for the Tigers.
Tigers coach Benji Marshall praised Olam, calling him one of the greatest players to come from Papua New Guinea, stating, “It’s been an absolute privilege having Justin at our Club.” Olam’s departure marks the end of an incredible chapter in his career, but his legacy will inspire many, particularly young players from Papua New Guinea.
Young gun Lachlan Galvin is expected to be the major beneficiary from the extra cap space as there were concerns around the club that they may not be able to keep him beyond 2026. These fears have largely been alleviated, with the Tigers expected to be able to offer up to 1.1m per season to extend. They will need to act quickly though, as Galvin is able to negotiate with rival clubs from November 2025, something we would expect to be encouraged by agent Isaac Moses in order to get his client the best deal possible.
Another player who could be set to benefit is outside back Taylan May. He is now free to come back to the NRL and a reunion with his brother Terrell in Leichhardt could be on the cards.
