Tiger Woods has announced his withdrawal from the upcoming Genesis Invitational at Torrey Pines, citing the recent death of his mother, Kultida Woods, as the reason. In a statement shared on social media, Woods expressed that he is “just not ready” to compete, despite his efforts to prepare, acknowledging that playing is what his mother would have wanted. He thanked supporters for their kindness and mentioned his hope to be at Torrey Pines later in the week.
The Genesis Invitational, typically held at Riviera Country Club, was relocated to Torrey Pines this year due to the recent wildfires in Los Angeles. Woods, who serves as the tournament host, had planned to make his first professional appearance in seven months at this event. His last start was at The Open Championship in July, after which he underwent back surgery in September. In December, he participated in the PNC Championship alongside his son, Charlie, and has also been involved in the TGL indoor simulator league he co-founded with Rory McIlroy.
Kultida Woods, who was 81, was a significant influence in Tiger’s life and career. In his announcement of her passing, Woods described her as a “force of nature” and his “biggest fan, greatest supporter,” noting that without her, none of his personal achievements would have been possible.
Woods’ withdrawal from the Genesis Invitational comes as he continues to process his loss. He expressed appreciation for the support he has received during this difficult time and indicated his intention to return to competition when he feels ready.
